City of Gods

Location: Woiworung Country — Melbourne, Victoria.

Dylan’s inspiration: Painted as an ode to my favourite city in Australia, I really wanted to capture the colour and vibrancy of this world-class city. My love for Paul Kelly (cue Leaps and Bounds) and input from Carlene influenced the Melbourne Cricket Ground — or MCG — being set in the foreground with many sporting gods having dazzled in this amazing stadium. I’ve warped the composition to add and subtract several key elements and consciously painted visible brush strokes to give the collector an unmistakable painting quality rather than a photograph.  

Carlene’s inspiration:  While temporarily living in Melbourne, I’d often drive past a version of this scene and always felt like it perfectly summed up this beautiful city — the MCG flanked by the natural, green landscape of the Yarra River and the city in the background. I’d like for the people of Melbourne to look at this scene and feel proud of their hometown.
